Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Types of Wood

What is Burl?: A distortion or unusual growth within a log that results in a blister or knotty grain. Very rare and expensive. Used mainly for auto dashboards and fine furniture.

What is Wormy / Wormed Wood?: A Wormed Wood is a wood that was infested by worms during some stage in it's development, and then later survived to grow to full maturity. The effect of the worms is either a pock mark type of effect on the wood somewhat like a knot but without any sort of ring around it or a long dark mark corresponding to the length of each worm. Which effect you get is entirely dependent on how the wood was cut. Wood can be both Burl and Wormy.

What is Blackened?: Blackened wood is typically a wood that has been darked by un-natural means, typically via the application of a flame for a very short time or via chemical treatment. The effect of blackening is to either make the wood darker overall, or to highlight certain parts of the grain. Some home designers have been known to take propane torches to brand new wood paneling to create such effects. Mixed color blackened wood is typically very expensive to buy pre-made, while same color is typically inexpensive in comparison.

Face Burl?: Face Burl is kind of an internal name for a type of burl design which may result in the look of a skeletal face or alien-looking trapped in the wood grain. This type of effect can occur naturally (and has been effectively used in some horror films), however it is more a fluke then a common event.

Will your wood pattern match my furniture?: It will depend on your specific furniture. The designs we offer are very close to real wood as far as looks, but we may not have a wood design in your furniture's specific wood grain. Please carefully look through our designs and compare them to your furniture to choose the best match.

Why are there so many burl designs?: Burl has traditionally been a very expensive and luxurious type of wood. There is a great number of Burl finish products on the market, and these products typically have a fairly strong demand. Burl is also a unique looking type of design and many people seek to have a unique PC.
